(back) Subject: Rear End From: "Dan Lawrence" <danl@fdn.com> Date: Sat, 24 Mar 2001 10:50:34 -0500 I knew at some point I was going to have to dig in to the rear end and see = what was up with the non-posi situation that I have. I was going to put it = off for a better financial time, but my curiosity got the best of me. I = checked the FAQs and saw where to find the location of the type of rear end, just 6" = left of cover. I sanded and got nothing. Then I looked at the cover and discover that it had 12 bolts holding on = the cover. When I had both rear tires off the ground, I could turn one and = the other doesn't move, both forward and backward. If it is open-ended, = doesn't the opposite tire move opposite and with the posi rear end aren't both tires = move in the same direction? Also, the rear u-joint has big and small caps, = the bastard type. Oh yeah, it has a muncie 4 speed too. What gives? Thanks again for all the help. Many thanks. Dan 68/coupe/428
(back) Subject: Re: Rear End From: "Todd Chynoweth" <pinec@pitnet.net> Date: Fri, 4 Jan 1980 10:32:36 -0600 Dan, When refering to 10 or 12 bolt it is how many bolts the ring gear is held = on by, Your car would have originally had a 8.2 auburn cone clutch type 10 bolt, = if it was safe-T-track,(posi) Typically an open rear end when both wheels are off the ground when = spinning one, the other will spin in the oposite direction, Jack up only one side leaving the other tire firmly on the ground, then = spin the one up in the air, If you cannot spin it easily you have posi, There is a tourque rating on a possie that can be overcome I am not sure what It is would have to look it up, You can always pull the cover off and check that way, A good time to = change the gear oil. You can see what ratio you have as well, there is a ratio stamped on the edge of the ring gear example 42:13 would be 3.23 The posi will have springs between the two spider gears where the axels go in. hope this helps Todd Then I looked at the cover and discover that it had 12 bolts holding on = the cover. When I had both rear tires off the ground, I could turn one and the other doesn't move, both forward and backward. If it is open-ended, = doesn't the opposite tire move opposite and with the posi rear end aren't both tires move in the same direction? Also, the rear u-joint has big and small caps, the bastard type. Oh yeah, it has a muncie 4 speed too. What gives? Thanks again for all the help. Many thanks. Dan 68/coupe/428

(back) Subject: Hurst Install From: "John Wern" <jwern@charter.net> Date: Sat, 24 Mar 2001 12:28:40 -0500 If everyone will remember I bought a HURST V- Matic II shifter off of ebay - Well it was kinda sticking becuase it was so old. So I sent it in = to Hurst to have it reworked. Well they sent it back, along with a brand new replacement. On the invoice they said it was so old they it couldnt = replace some parts. So they just gave me a new one. Best part -they only charged = me $50.00. Well I finished the install yesterday and it came out very nice. = It is a really good fit if anyone is interested in changing their shifters = and not going to the dual gate. I posted some pics of the final product... http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumList?u=3D1545959&f=3D0 Thanks for all. John.
(back) Subject: Re: Rear End From: "Glenn Uettwiller" <birdman@gdi.net> Date: Sat, 24 Mar 2001 14:24:23 -0500 Todd, remember that the cue Chevy gave us to identify rear ends was that the number of bolts inside on the ring gear was the same number used on the cover! Also, there may be some codes stamped on the front of the passenger side axle tube - that's become the GM corporate policy for axle markings. Later axles used a 3-letter code. It's also possible to determine the ratio by crayon-marking the pinion, housing, drums, and backing plates, then turning both wheels one full turn each while counting the rotations of the pinion. If 3-1/4 turn, 3.23. If slightly more than 3-1/2 turn, that's 3.55. Almost 3-3/4 turn is either 3.70 or 3.73. Dan, the Pontiac style center section has a 10-bolt cover, 5 each around the top and bottom, divided by notches that look like indented ears on either side. Maybe there's a photo somewhere on the website, or look in your Service Manual!
