Temco sell a HD 5 speed conversion kit for $2500 >>> hotroddr@juno.com 03/17/01 11:17PM >>> First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List .......................................................................... I came across a 700-r4 tranny today that is allegedly from an 86 camaro. It does not have a dipstick so i have not checked the fluid. Does anyone have any experience w/these? Anything to look for? How about the lockup switch? How do I connect that and how much would that cost. It doesnt have any plug w/it. It is not in any car right now either. What kind of crossmember mods/driveshaft mods would I have to do? Also is there any way to tell if the torque converter is the right one? Has anyone ever swapped a 6 speed manual in a first gen? I am wondering about that instead. Would that be expensive or hard compared to a 700-r4? Thanks Dennis ____________________________________________________________

The older ones don't hold up. Plus, the 700r4's only fit chevy engines, you would need an adapter. As for a Stick shift, check out this web site : http://www.fortesparts.com/tremec.html Stumann >>.........................................................................= >I came across a 700-r4 tranny today that is allegedly from an 86 camaro. >It does not have a dipstick so i have not checked the fluid. (back) Subject: Re: header fabrication- From: "Tom Grzywacz" <ban67shee@hotmail.com> Date: Sun, 18 Mar 2001 21:10:43 -0500 Ditto with Garys comment..Exhaust shops will bend you what you need. Had = one done for $10 and took 5 minutes, took home, needed little more curve, and rebent for free..I had better luck with private owned shops..Midas wanted $35..and said leave it for a few days. Tom i am modifying a set of 1970 'bird super comp headers to fit my 1968. I have one tube on the header that won;t fit pas tthe steering box. i ahve heard that a manual steering box might fit this but i want ps. so i have decided to re-make the header. i recently bought a welder and i have been practicing welding thin 2" tubes into all sorts of shapes the problem is that i don;t have a tubing bender. where can i get a tubing bender that will bent 2"-4" exhaust tube without crushing it/?? anyone have any experience with this??i have heard of "mandrel bent" headers but io don;t know what a mandrel is. or how one works. i would like to get something that will bend from 2"-4" tubes so that i can do the whole exhaust system = my self. what about flaring tools ?? where can i find this gear? i have checked a few places locally with no luck danny 68-400 new mexico Danny, It wouldnt be feasible to buy a tubing bender for a 2 inch pipe. Any exhaust shop will have one. My advise is to have them bend one to the shape needed then splice it in yourself. Heres a little trick I use to pattern tubing. Use a stiff but bendable wire ,such as what a coat hanger is made from, and bend a pattern of the shape you need. If you use the centerline of existing tube then bend pattern to follow. Using the center line of new tube, compare the wire pattern to it while bending. It can get complicated with compound curves so use your imagination. Just remember that the fewer and more gradual the bends the better. If possible have the end of replacement tube swedged to act like a coupling. Try not to butt weld tubing together,as its better to weld the flared portion to the parent tube. Also best to face the repair portion of flange away from exhaust flow. As for the rest of exhaust use a system from Walker/Dynomax who offer mandrel bent over axle pipes for F bodys.
