I am thrilled = with the way my new bird starts the first time of the day, but once hot, it has = a hard time cranking. The previous owner said this is a common Pontiac 400 problem. He also said the starter never had a heat shield since he bought = it, and that adding one might help. I also noticed some of the aftermarket shops advertising high torque = starters to solve the problem. Any ideas? PS: It was 60 degrees and sunny yesterday here in St. Louis. (back) Subject: Engine question - updated From: "Mic" <firemans68bird@yahoo.com> Date: Sun, 11 Mar 2001 12:59:54 -0800 (PST) Hey all, Thanks to those that responded with helpful info on identifying the engine. I finally got a chance to look at the engine today. From what I can figure from the numbers and a visual check it is a Pontiac 400 from a 1978 car. The carb on it is a 4bbl Q-jet from a 1978 Pontiac w/AT, 49 state usage. The heads are 6X. I didn't get a chance to hear the motor run, but will next week. The guy wants $400 for it with everything on it now. It also includes the HEI. Pics can be seen at my website (url is below). The pics are listed under "400 engine." Check them out and let me know what you think. I was wondering if his price is fair? I'm going to try to get him closer to $300. The plan for this motor is to make it a powerful street motor. Hopefully in the 400hp range. Is this reasonable? I'm also looking for input on what book(s) would help a first-timer with rebuilding this motor. Any suggestions would be appreciated. (back) Subject: V8 Problem Part-HELP! From: "Glenn Uettwiller" <birdman@gdi.net> Date: Sun, 11 Mar 2001 18:07:07 -0500 Hey, guys, to my horror I am working on a Pontiac V-8 engine, and I'm losing sleep at night. I am in need of the little dowel pins that locate the timing case to the block at the bottom 2 bolts. The parts manual says "not serviced", and so does the local dealer. The parts store guys are stumped as well. You V-8 guys must know what I'm talking about, since it's actually a hollow little sleeve, not a solid dowel pin like the cylinder head uses. I measured the holes in the block and timing case, and they're about ..490". The one dowel I have that was in the engine has a split in it. I thought about making them from a 1/2" piece of tubing, but haven't been able to find that easily either. Is there something I can buy locally? Or maybe someone can send me one from a parts engine. Even Gary didn't have one with all the engines at his place. Too many sixes there too! Glenn aka birdman

(back) Subject: Re: Blinkers? From: "ROY D LUMSDEN" <rlumsden@tampabay.rr.com> Date: Sun, 11 Mar 2001 19:21:48 -0500 Since the blinkers and the flashers use different flasher modules (don't know the proper name) I'm betting on either a loose connection at the steering column harness at the base of the column or a corroded ground. Michael, $400 sounds good if it sounds good. I would buy/borrow a compression tester if you plan on just dropping engine in w/o rebuild. Look for = typical problems...blue smoke at start up, knocks, check coolant in radiator for condition, and check oil consistancy. Rev it up a few times under load, = and no load. May be a gremlin somewhere. If you see/hear something wrong, = don't hesitate to talk the price down. If you plan on 400 hp, plan on a rebuild..or plan on keeping a few tow cards close by. Good luck, I hope it works out for you. nothing beats a good deal, a fresh engine, and 70 degree days.
