I have been a silent member for a while now as my 68 bird has been in hibernation. But it is now slowly come awake. I drove it this weekend = and remembered why I bought the car in the first place. I love it! Here is my question: I am having a 700R4 put in this weekend and need a = new shifter. (back) Subject: Re: Cheviac or Ponchette? From: "pete" <yaselskyp@webtv.net> Date: Mon, 5 Mar 2001 12:24:02 -0800 (PST)   Rowan, I would say go for it. I would recommend that you put the engine as far back and as low as possible and have the driveline cut/rebalanced to fit. To do the work on the drive line here only costs about $20. My 68 has a chevy in it right now. The HEI is about 1/4 inch away from the firewall, and sits really low. Even more so than the 68 camaros engine set up. Ive been told that this helps with the weight distribution, and I could go on and on about what this effects but Im not an expert on the matter so I will spare everyone on my attempt to sell this particular engine set-up. I would recommend that before you start this venture that you start with the fuel system. Since I already have a cheby in mine I think it would be safe to say that this is the only area that needs attention once you do the actual swap. I am in the process of doing a subframe swap on my bird. I can take pictures and make copies of the adaptors that were used to set the engine where it is. Alls you would have to do is mount the brackets and work on the trans x-member, which I belive the 400 xmember can be uses for the 700r4. Again I have HEI which is alittle bigger than the regular dist. and adjusting the firewall with a BFH was not needed. Just let me know:) Of course if you let people from the group discourage you I would ALWAYS be more than happy to take the engine/trans combo off your hands:):)     http://community.webtv.net/yaselskyp/WelcometoPetesPlace

Unless I was unknowingly one of the original 3. heh:) Since I already have a cheby enigine in mine and am trying/going to convert it to TPI with a 700r4 I would say that Im already half way there. Im just curious to see hear what others have run into trying to do the swap.
(back) Subject: Procedure for changing Body Bushings From: "AL ROJAS" <amr@appsig.com> Date: Mon, 05 Mar 2001 12:40:29 -0800   Does anyone have a procedure for changing the body bushings? I've never attempted this and I want to try. There has got to be a painless way, and I'm sure you guys have tried everything. May main questions are, how do I lift the body away from the frame without screwing something up. What needs to be disconnected (Andy mentioned disconnecting the steering coupler). Do I need any special tools.   Also, I was at Kragen and they carry "performance" poly urethane body bushings for $60 (includes bolts and washers). Is this the going rate?   Al

I think this subject is better left to the experienced enging builders, and not the novice..hate for someone to loose a piston this early in season!     Frank, There has been alot of research on lower compression(9.5-9.0) Being run on street. There are no problems there. Go above 10.0 and you will have problems. HR and HPP both did a low comp vs high comp engine comparison. With the same parameters the low comp one beat the higher one. I dont consider an engine that has to run Av gas as a true daily cruiser, which is what I think John is after. Im very familar with the physics of an internal combustion engine, and agree that CR is one of the key factors in making power. But dont sacrifice driveability for it. Seen this too many times Build a wild ass motor and have fun driving it one week end a month and spend the other 3 working on it...... OR build a nice powerful street = motor, drive it 3 weekends a month and spend the other waxing the car. And yes there are differences in port flow on D port heads which is exactly the reason for Petes article in the first place. As for the higher compression ratios, ask Glenn what it will do on a OHC-6. Ive run a 230 Sprint head with 45 cc chamber on a 250 bored. I also O ringed the block and used steel .016 head gasket. this puts the CR at around 11.5:1. Glenn is currently running this same ported head on his 250. ( Well almost hes had TOO much fun and may have spun a rod bearing. I ve also run 12.5:1 SBCs on the street, but thats another story. This mega-event is scheduled to take place from September 21 through 23, 2001 in Bowling Green, Kentucky   Since it roared to life in the fall of 1966, September 29th. Camaro has given millions a taste of "performance - American style." With its = muscular V-8's and rear drive - great road handling suspension components, and uncompromising styling - Camaro remains after nearly 34 years, the "purest of the breed" and part of the American motoring landscape.   Some short months later, General Motors introduced another of its F-body automobile and named it the Pontiac Firebird. Like the Camaro, the = Firebird soon took its rightful place in American automobile folklore.   The three-day birthday celebration is open to all automobile enthusiasts, as it will surely offer something for everyone both young and old. Friday begins bright and early at the renowned Beech Bend Raceway Park where owners can hone their driving prowess in the low speed autocross event. At the same time, the National Corvette Museum will be open for event participants to "review" the grand display of Corvettes and the weekend highlight, The F-Body." Planned to be on centerpiece at the Museum are:   1967 Indianapolis Pace Car 1982 Indianapolis Pace Car 1993 Indianapolis Pace Car 1996 Brickyard Pace Car ZL1 Camaro 510 Camaro Camaro TransAm 2-seater California Design Camaro "Play it Loud" Camaro Live Aid Camaro Camaro RS (25th Anniversary white/black stripes) And more   These fine collections of one of a kind F-bodies are courtesy of General Motors and each one has a unique place in the cars long, illustrious history. Let us take for instance, the Live Aid Camaro. It is a 1985 IROC (with less than 200 miles on it!) that was on the concert stage the night in Philadelphia, PA.. the Live Aid song was first performed. Each of the performers signed the car.. Then it was clear coasted.put in a warehouse and never to be seen again.. Until 1996!   The remainder of Friday's venue includes a road tour to Holley Performance here in Bowling Green. Some serious ground-pounding trickery can be found at this Plant which has shared a close bond with the F-Bodies. From mild to wild, Holley's reputation for exacting the most out any car is world-renowned. Enjoy the VIP tour that Holley is presenting to its F-Body guests. Holley is the home of the NASCAR Dominator!   We will then met up at the Corvette Plant Assembly Plant afterwards for an informative tour of Corvette's birthplace. Here you will experience how another American legend comes to life. The Corvette Assembly Plant is = truly unique, as it is the only Assembly Plant dedicated to production of a single automobile marquee.   Later that afternoon, the NCM will host its signature Hospitality Night. Enjoy the warm summer breeze in the Museum's Party Barn. Wallow the = evening away with good food and outstanding company!   Saturday morning, find yourself amidst the snarls of GM small blocks (some big blocks too!) and the smell of burnt rubber as the owners strut their stuff at the drag races at Beech Bend Raceway Park, but make it a point to be back to the NCM in time to take in some truly unique and informative seminars and technical sessions. This venues will allow some Q&A at the = end of the individual presentations, not to mention an opportunity for autographs and memories. Just to name a few of the presenters we plan to have:   Jon Moss - Chevy Specialty Vehicles. The "big-daddy" of go-fast and carry a big stick! Jon is synonymous to Camaro as speed is to a speedometer. He is the keeper of, "THE TOY STORE." What more can we say about Jon.. Nothing, just don't miss his presentation.   John Heinricy - former Chief Engineer Camaro/Firebird. A FIA World Record Speed & Endurance TitleHolder, a renowned GM engineer and pretty decent racecar driver too!   Scott Settlemire, Camaro/Corvette Brand Team. A "Bow-Tie Red" man from the brand team. Scott has been a long time supporter of the NCM and a true car-guy!   It that's not enough, come join us later that afternoon as we take a leisurely drive past rolling green hills and old red barns as we take the sights only this part of South Central Kentucky can offer.   Finally that evening, enjoy the ambience of the National Corvette Museum = at night as we host the gala banquet and awards presentation in the Museum's Skydome. Dine and socialize among the stars of Corvette. Featured guest speakers will entertain us well into the night.   Sunday morning, get your wash rags out and let us have a Car Show! Nothing too serious, our invited Celebrity Guests will be out and about picking their picks from the show grounds. Everyone is invited to also take in the sights and vote for their favorites ride in the People's Choice Awards. Stay around as later in the day, we'll announce the winners and allow them to = do a "parade lap" around the Museum!   Amidst all of three day events are many other venues. From vendor demonstrations, to dyno testing to a variety of vendor booths and = technical seminars!       -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please read the LIST RULES at http://www.f-body.org/listrules.cfm or risk being dropped from the list. How "bent" is the valve? Is there and damage to valve seat or chunks out of cooling jacket = on outer lip of chamber? A few things that could have caused this...spring failure, retainer or lock failure. Another thing, cracked guide. Once the tension on spring is relieved, the valve just drops down onto piston. If there is no scoring on cyl wall from valve, cool. Piston may need replaced =   depending on severity of damage, but better to be safe than sorry, replace =   it if the engine has low milage, replace all if needs rebuild anyway.     Tom     List members,   I have run across a 400 engine that has the #8 intake valve bent.
