(back) Subject: Re: Head flow # comparison (Attn. Niklas) From: "Tom Grzywacz" <ban67shee@hotmail.com> Date: Sat, 03 Mar 2001 00:41:25 -0500 So - and I know little about this. I read this email almost 10 times. = You guys... I have 6x heads on my '77-400 (that is running and in my FB). But = I have 16 heads on my '68-400 (that is sitting in the corner). Should I put the #16 heads on my motor? I dont really understand all this, are there simple terms I can understand?? John John, I had 6X-4's on my 77 400 engine in a 67 bird. Reasoning, the compression = ratio is lower, and tuning and timing is forgiving. If you went to the = 16's, you will need to run at least 93-4 octane and possibly an additive (considering carb calibration not too lean and timing right) You would be = at 10 to 1 with the 16's if heads are uncut, with .030 bore. I swapped my 6X-4's for the 670's and learned alot more about proper carb tuning and timing. Engine rune 50% better, getting better milage and loving the performance! Besides, she sounds helluvalot better with the 670's on (same = cc's as the 16's) The CR that you can get away with before having to resort to greater = means has alot to do with timing, carb calibration, intake type, head CC. For instance, I have a 428, bored .030 with a negative 16 cc (recessed piston) and 66 cc RA III heads. As is, I am at about 10.5 to 1. If I kept the stock piston relief cc's (6.7) I have less area in chamber which = results in greater compression, which would raise CR to 11.3 to 1. With the 10.5 = to 1 CR, I need to run 94 octane and add 4 gallons of 104 to keep engine from = detonation (pre-ignition from less area) With the 11.3 CR, I need to run = at least a 50/50 mix of 94 and 104. People say 10 to 1 is max for 94 octane..which a 16 head swap would yield. I say go for it, but keep an ear = out for that detonation gremlin when hitting the accelerator..if you hear = a ping/thung...you can safely accelerate to the nearest 104/110 pump, and customize your fuel ratios... I had a period of 2 months where I tried 7 = or 8 different ratios..before getting to appx 96 octane with a 10.2 to 1 CR engine. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

Works great, about the same length as the TH400 but I did have to have my driveshaft redone. (back) Subject: Sprint Air Cleaner question From: "Steve Stinefelt" <stevestinefelt@hawaii.rr.com> Date: Fri, 2 Mar 2001 22:27:04 -1000 I will soon be in the market for a factory air cleaner for my '68 Sprint 'Bird and have a question for any knowledgeable list members. What's a = fair price for a decent OHC 4-bbl air cleaner? I really have no idea, and = would really appreciate your wisdom. Thanks in advance!!! Steve
