(back) Subject: Re: Repro Rally II Wheels From: <hugoba@apcom.com> Date: Fri, 16 Feb 2001 19:06:37 -0800 (PST) A few comments: 1- When I went to the Pick'nPull out here in San Jose I noticed that they = were using rims as jack stands (on rim welded on vertically to a horizontal = one) to prop up the cars. I also noticed a WHOLE bunch of them were made out of = our dear Rallye II's! I just cringed. 2- A couple of years ago I bought a set of 14's and a set of 15's from a = local guy that advertised in the paper for $20.00 a piece. Yesterday I pulled out one of the 15's and spent about half an hour at the = sand blaster and barely made a dent on removing the old paint. 3- I called Summit to order a set of 4 15"'ers and they said they were = supposed to get them in by the end of the month so I rdered them (they are 92 bucks = or so) since I figured it would take me FOREVER to sandblast 4 of them and = then paint them and get them to look as good as the 14's that I got before. 4- Thanks Bob!! They used to sell a kit with metal Xmas ornaments that you would 'fill' with the supplied colored plastic pellets. Bake in the oven at around 250 or so and you're done. My wife did this some years ago and ornaments still look new. Worth a try anyway. Rick 69 Firebird

I grew up in New Zealand, and like you had no opportunity to experience the America Muscle cars on the road (owned a pretty cool 1970 Holden - if the Listers know what that is). I have been here for eight years now. When i sold my house in NZ last year (i worked out i really wasn't going back) I purchased the Firebird i had been drooling over for the past month. To add old to new, i found the car on the web, and made several pilgrimages to see her before my house finally closed. I too thought i wanted a 1st gen camaro, until i saw a 1st gen Firebird on the interstate about a year ago. Fortunately the bloke i was with knew what it was! My bird has been owned by three women before me. In the last month i had been approached three times by female teens who are goo goo about my car, so i figure there is plenty interest in the younger generations for our first gen toys. One gal asked me when i might sell my car, i told to come back and see me in 60 years. Cheers! (back) Subject: Re : E-bay From: "Dale J. Barkla" <systech@tig.com.au> Date: Sat, 17 Feb 2001 17:45:41 +1100 I think Chris is right. It's a matter of being sensible about it. I usually wait until the last 5 minutes and then put in my max bid and walk away. On a couple of occasions I've put in an almost obscene figure but the convenience of E-bay (ie. having the thing right there in front of me) = helps a lot versus late night phone calls to the U.S. trying to track down = a part and thinking I got a good deal until the phone bill comes. It's a matter of taking into account ALL costs. I also found a couple of times where there must have been something going on in the U.S. (holiday?) as I picked up a rear bumper for $30, perfectly straight with good daily driver = chrome and a very good price on a '68 round remote mirror which I'll be modifying to go on the passenger side of the car to match my driver side one (yes, it's almost an evil thing to do but I can't get the car registered without 2 mirrors and mine had the factor round remote which I love) Generally, I don't think the prices are much better and some of = them are a rip off ie. the NOS stuff that's a repro..........cheers, Dale '68 Conv. > I got it for $76 !!! (back) Subject: Mad Max & Car show - was : Re: An observation about us 1st genners From: "Dale J. Barkla" <systech@tig.com.au> Date: Sat, 17 Feb 2001 18:06:31 +1100 Jeff, I think Mad Max was "Road Warrior" in the U.S ? I remember going = to the drive-in and seeing it with another petrol head movie which escapes my = memory. Half time and everyone's got their bonnets (hoods) open and = reving the guts out of their beast. Not to mention the burnouts coming out of = the drive-in later on. As far as AMC's go I see a few occasionally but they're not worth very much and not considered collectable or "in" like = our birds. You can pick a really nice original AMC for about $5k US and it would have a paint job that you could eat your breakfast off. Funny, to be honest I can't even remember an AMC in Mad Max. Must have been a Javelin ? On topic : Gerry Green and I are heading to a car show (Gembrook) tomorrow = and if it's like last year there should be 6 - 10 first gen birds. Is anyone else on the list going ? .....cheers, Dale '68 COnv. > Glad to hear it mate. I guess you could say you have one of the "last of = the > V-8's" Are there really a lot of AMC's in OZ like in Mad Max? Night Rider. > Remember him when you look up at the night sky...
(back) Subject: Treatment of exposed metal From: "Dale J. Barkla" <systech@tig.com.au> Date: Sat, 17 Feb 2001 18:12:56 +1100 I've been wire wheeling a lot of the gunk (seam sealer) off my interior = and at times I expose patches of bare metal. Anyone got any tips on what I should put on the metal to stop surface rust ? Should I temporarily prime = it or just give it a dose of WD40/RP7 every once in a while ? It will be AT LEAST another 8 months before I get the bird into a paint = shop....thanks in advance....Dale '68 Conv.
