(back) Subject: Re: AC or not to AC From: "Bob Cisneros" <Bob.Cisneros@ebay.sun.com> Date: Mon, 12 Feb 2001 16:14:40 -0800 (PST) A couple of advantages to using this product is that their systems is much more compact compared to the stock system, is R134 compatible, and probably more efficient than the original system as well. Ask any factory A/C car owners about the pain and agony of performing a spark plug change. The Vintage Air product should make this much easier since most of the system is hidden inside the car. In a recent edition of Classic Car Garage on Speedvision, the host talked to an air conditioning pro who often installed Vintage Air systems in hot rods. Both the technician and Vintage Air's own documentation suggested installation by an A/C pro due to the complexity and the risks of accidentally venting the refrigerant to the atmosphere. But I would think that the Vintage Air system for your car should be fairly straight forward, custom made for that car and dash, and will include all the necessary brackets and hoses. I feel fairly competent mechanically so I'd probably install the system if it were my car, then leave the final charging and testing up to a pro. -BoB San Jose, CA 1968 Convertible bob.cisneros@Sun.COM Roy Lumsden writes: >Easy... $1000 and a weekends worth of work. Paint does not stick to chrome very well , first I would try to scratch the paint off with my finger nail = , than a small screw driver to get in the nooks and tight spots , any chemicals that will remove paint from your emblems will definitely remove paint from your car . Is this too much trouble and should one just buy the repos? Thanks, Larry Larry ,use model enamel paint. lay emblem flat(a piece of Styrofoam or cardboard works good for holding) apply paint with even strokes without stopping at each letter. (back) Subject: Engine breakin From: "Gary Patrick" <Gary@tcworks.net> Date: Mon, 12 Feb 2001 20:35:56 -0500 Subject: Re: fresh engine breakin From: <Paddy68@aol.com> Date: Mon, 12 Feb 2001 12:57:57 EST thats not the way I would breakin a fresh motor. Have you changed your oil & filter yet? heres what i do. Run engine for 30 minutes high steady idle to breakin cam drain oil and change filter, run 500 miles using new car breakin rules. Change oil and filter again. first few miles should be a light throttle then coast light throttle then coast. this will help in seating rings. NO full throttle blasts.... I know its tempting but its proven that the infancy of a fresh engine will pretty much determine its life. have fun and make it last. Gary I don't know how true that is. I'm not trying to start a war but my = friend owns a speed/machine shop and when he dyno's an engine he breaks in the = cam via the manufacturers recommended 2400 rpm for 20 minute deal. He then changes the oil to get rid of the assembly lube and whatever metal = fragments might be left from the machining process. Even after his hot tanking, pressure washing and standard washing there is still a chance there are pieces still in the engine. After the cam has been broken in he makes = full pulls on it up to 7500 depending on the engine combo. He could make as = many as 10 pulls before you get the engine. With each pull he is changing = things to see where the engine makes the most power. He can easily get ten to twenty more horses out of your combo by doing things like jetting, timing, different carbs/manifolds (depending on the customers needs). You also = get an engine that is ready to fire and run at peak performance when you get = it. No testing needed by you in the car. Just plop it in and drive away. = These engines range anywhere from circle track/drag racing applications to = street motors. It seems to work for him. He says that if it's done right the = sh*-t should stay together. Paddy No war just difference of opinions.Cycling the engine up and down is what seats the rings. The vacuum of a coast cycle will pull the rings closer to the walls on the bottom side and the part throttle will push them outward on the top = side. Alot of the ring seating depends on the rings them selves and the finish = of the cylinder walls. Also things like a hone plate and main bearings being torqued help = too. your buddy probably gets away with this procedure because of the = clearances he builds these motors to. You cant convince me that 20 minutes of running has = broken an engine in. I guess Im old fashion from the old school. Anyone can build a hand grenade, making it last is another story. Gary

The ladies at church had planned a shower for my wife and baby and considered cancelling it when the baby came almost 2 weeks late. I digress.....I was taking pictures when someone asked about the baby and the 'bird. I told them that as soon as Cinnamon's neck muscles were strong enough she would be in the garage w/ dad. I needed to teach her how to count and a 3/8" drive socket set was a great way to teach that! The ladies did not find my idea humorous at all. My hope is to teach her what kind of young man to look for when that fateful day arrives. If she knows more about changing tires and oil than he does, she'll need to keep looking. Besides, having a little girl is the best excuse to get a 1st Gen drop top. That way I can show off both of my favorite women! Good night all, and thanks for your kind words.
