From: "John Wern" <jwern@gw.total-web.net> Date: Sat, 10 Feb 2001 22:45:03 -0500 It's awesome when it idles you can hear the cam. If I'm cruizin at 30mph and I put my foot all the way on it - the tire spins. If I get on it = from a stand still it spins all the way from first into 3rd. It dont let up till I do. thats not the way I would breakin a fresh motor. Have you changed your oil & filter yet? heres what i do. Run engine for 30 minutes high steady idle to breakin cam drain oil and change filter, run 500 miles using new car breakin rules. Change oil and filter again. first few miles should be a light throttle then coast light throttle then = coast. this will help in seating rings. NO full throttle blasts.... I know its tempting but its proven that the infancy of a fresh engine will pretty much determine its life. have fun and make it last. Gary
(back) Subject: Re: LONG BRANCH MANIFOLDS From: "Frank Zeller" <fzeller@tri-austin.com> Date: Sun, 11 Feb 2001 08:15:47 -0600 Jim hand did a comparison between header and the long branch and found = very little difference. My personal experience with converting to long = branch from stock logs is that there is a increase in low end torque and a = huge difference is HP from 4000 rpm to red line (5800) this was on a 400 = with RA4 cam. You can install a 2.5 inch head pipe to the long branches. = The stock logs will only take a 2.0 inch head pipe. So if you have a = stock motor that never revs above 4000 rpm then stick with the stock logs. = If you have a modified motor that was built to makes good HP above 4000 = and shift at 5500 the long branch are the way to go. I think the Hot Rod = Magazine comparison is not real world because it does not take in account = the effects of a full complete exhaust system. Frank

From: "Frank Zeller" <fzeller@tri-austin.com> Date: Sun, 11 Feb 2001 08:19:35 -0600 Sounds like you need a posi and make sure you don't have the back end = jacked up. (this kills weight transfer) Tire smoke does not win races. Frank >>> jwern@gw.total-web.net 02/10/01 09:45PM >>> First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List .......................................................................... You guys, I just got done with the exhaust on my '68 Coupe 400. Let me tell you. I put MAGNAFLOW performance exhaust mufflers with 2.5" pipes starting at BlackJack headers all the way to where it bends over the axle then went 2.25" the rest of the way. It seemed to give it a little back pressure and let me tell you it gave it a sorta real deepish not loud but heard sorta like coming from the back of your throat rumble. If you are thinking of exhaust really think about the Magna FLow. It's a straight = thru muffler. It's awesome when it idles you can hear the cam. If I'm cruizin at 30mph and I put my foot all the way on it - the tire spins. If I get on it = from a stand still it spins all the way from first into 3rd. It dont let up till I do. I need springs in the back though. Or I've also come to the conclusion - two people only. Nobody in the back seat. hee hee. Just thought I'd let you guys know. John and a bad ass 400 coupe that looks = like it's asleep....
(back) Subject: RE: From 30 I can melt rubber.. From: "Slobird" <marcts@ga.prestige.net> Date: Sun, 11 Feb 2001 09:25:37 -0500 good story John, I just started up my 455 yesterday for the first time. Water ran out of = the holes in the block where drain plugs are supposed to be. Put them in. Ignition wire was not connected. Connected it and started up. THen ran = for a few minutes, and was standing by the battery, and boom, the negative = post blew off. Right in my face, luckily, i was able to close my eyes but a piece of hot metal hit me in the eyelid. THe battery cable had moved over and hit the header pipe making a short. But then I took her around the block, with no hood, and this engine is a different animal than the 350, with no tuning and the 600 carb from the = 350 i gave some gas and the secondaries kicked in and started burning rubber. With the xe268 cam which is around 225/230 at .050 it an awsome sounding idle, but is the most cam I would want. It is pulling around 12 lbs of vacuum at idle, which i don't have my tach hooked up so don't know what = is.

From: <hugoba@apcom.com> Date: Sun, 11 Feb 2001 10:52:38 -0800 (PST) Sounds like a floating ground somewhere in the back. If you have a bad ground then you get ground loops that cause weird = conditions as you mentioned. It may even be happening on one of the other sockets but the light will = glow on the one you are working on. Pull all of the sockets out of the light assemblies in the back and take = all of the light bulbs out. Then put them in one at a time and test all the = functions as you add bulbs. When you put one in that starts causing problems (maybe elsewhere) then that's the socket with the bad ground causing the loop. From: "Stu Langer" <stumann@inlink.com> Date: Sun, 11 Feb 2001 14:45:40 -0600 There is no ground wire on the sockets, therefore the socket must be in place for them to work properly. Often, this ground connection becomes corroded and things get crazy. Also, make sure you don't have the bulb in backwards (common mistake). Try taking the bulb out and turning it 180 degrees. (back) Subject: From: "Just Rod" <pjozif@hotmail.com> Date: Sun, 11 Feb 2001 21:18:29 -0000 hello everyone its been a while since i've written. I have the 68 firebird with the 76' = 350 engine. After i pulled the 2bbl carb/intake, i realized that my camshaft = was fairly worn.--so anyhow what started as a cam swap has led to a full = engine rebuild. I figured the bearings would be just as worn--they werent to bad though, i figured i would re-ring it, since the walls are good, it will = just be honed. I am having the 6X-4 heads rebuilt to go with the rings and everything is in the process of being hot tanked. I'm going with an Ertel brand cam, its a 204/214 with .443/.465- otherwise = everything else will be relativly stock. except for the custom built QJ = and recurved distributor along with carb spacer and open element and 2.5 inch head pipes off the stock logs. I'm also going with a street/strip shift = kit. My rear end is now a non posi 3.08- I'm hoping to build around 240-260hp net and push it under the 15 second mark on the muscle car measuring stick. (ie. the 1/4 mile) thought i'd just update my build and get some feed back!
