(back) Subject: Re: 400 engine differences... From: "Joe Brown" <jb.pb@gte.net> Date: Wed, 7 Feb 2001 17:11:21 -0800 I have to correct my first response , I was writing about the motor mount holes , 68 block only have 2 holes at the bottom for the motor mount , = newer blocks have 5 holes , 2 for old and 3 new style brackets , some blocks might have them all tapped with treads , some might not , so check to see that they are drilled and tapped with treads before you install the motor = .. I will guarantee that there is no HP difference in blocks , the bore and stroke is the same on all 400 blocks , the heads with smaller cambers will give you higher compression , alittle more HP, Some 400 came with bigger cams that would give you more HP . A 68 400 crank will fit every 400 = block built up 1979 , heads , cams timing chain , intake , it all interchanges . Joe

It is listed for 67,68, and 69. My 67 Firebird parts book = supplement lists a different number than the one on ebay also. My 72 master catalog = shows that number for 67, 68, and 69. I think the 67 one had a different knob = but by 72 it had been discontinued and replaced with the 68 and later one. Ones = like the one on Ebay are still available and are in the repro catalogs (Classic = I know) for $86. If you needed one for a 68 or 69 it would be the correct = one. (back) Subject: new member and a question From: "Robert Kerr" <kerrcl@earthlink.net> Date: Wed, 7 Feb 2001 21:54:34 -0600 I have a 69 Sprint hardtop I drove from the time I was seventeen until I parked it about three years ago. I just brought it home from storage and started tearing into it. Standard interior, power steering, with the deluxe seatbelts. Manual = drums, three speed, open 3.55 rear end. For most of the time I have owned it it had a Borg-Warner Super T-10 in = it. Now it has the Saginaw 4 speed in dire need of a new shifter. Yes, it = still has the Sprint engine which runs great (or did when it was parked) aside from oil leaking around the crank and cam seals, also the valves have = always leaked oil so I get the blue cloud on startup. It was rebuilt twelve = years ago. My question is about the roof insulation. Mine is falling down, and I am curious as to how much of a difference it makes and what would be a good replacement? Thanks, Craig

(back) Subject: Re: 400 engine differences... From: <Paddy68@aol.com> Date: Thu, 8 Feb 2001 01:42:25 EST The major differences in these two engines are very minor. As with any 2 barrel engine, the heads are of small valve design. If you want the same compression and horsepower as the 68 you will only have to buy a cam, manifold and carb, and 68 heads. I would recommend buying a set of 7K3's = or 48's. These heads don't have the crazy compression like the 67-70 heads = and they have the bigger valves. Incidentally, the 72 engine probably has the = better oil pan. I'm not sure but I think the 72 pan has a trap in it = which holds oil at the pump during cornering and heavy acceleration. Everything = else is pretty much the same internals and externals. You will have to = use the exhaust manifolds form a 68 bird though. Good luck and good score.

It should be noted the engine was in advanced stages of throwing a rod and needing a rebuild. I would rather be cautious rather than ruining an engine. If you have a high performance engine, you should be using the additives in my opinion since these need all the octane they can get.
