Here in PA same thing, winter is here and the Bird is tucked in the garage. I did however start it a couple of times this past week since I was putting the finishing touches on my garage addition. (back) Subject: Spring, and Convertible Alarms From: "bird@mail.javanet.com" <bird@mail.javanet.com> Date: Tue, 30 Jan 2001 12:38:38 -0500   For a broad and helpful discussion of alarms for convertibles, I recommend = you check out the following website: www.thirdgen.org. This is a site = that specializes in 3d gen F-bodies. They have great discussion topics = where opinions are posted freely. The topic on alarms for convertibles = came up there. Though it dealt with 3d gens, it would apply equally to 1st = gens. I believe it was discussed in the section for either "appearance" = or "body and interior." In any event you can do a search in the archives = - it was definitely a live thread within the past 2-3 weeks.   As for spring, unfortunately based on the weather here in Maine the = groundhog is definitely going to see his shadow and stay under for an = additional six weeks. I haven't seen my 67 'bird convertible since = November, and the only part of my newly-acquired 92 'bird convertible I = have seen since November is the leather interior I just bought (out of a = 98 t/a) to install in the spring. If you want the definition of pathetic, = it is me sitting on my leather t/a seats watching "My Classic Car" re-runs = on TNN.       -------------------------------------------------------------------- Mail2Web - Check your email from the web at http://www.mail2web.com/ .

AND I QUOTE "Friction does not depend on the area of contact. so those extra wide = tires you see on some cars provide no more friction than narrower tires. the wider tire simply spreads the weight of the car over a greater area to reduce heating and wear. simaliarly the friction between a truck and the ground is the same weather the truck has 4 tires or 18. more tires spread the load over more of a ground area and reduce the pressure per tire. interestingly stopping distance when brakes are applied is not effected by the # of tires, but the wear that the tires experience."   i found this very interesting. it is in black and white in my physics = book, so i have to believe it. now i know that a softer tire will grip the road better, and will not last as long. and the springy sidewalls of slicks = will absorb some of the launch energy and release it later when the tire s have more traction, but it seems common sense that a wider tire would have more traction. well then again 500 years ago common sense would tell you that the earth was flat..... :>)   -danny 68 400 coupe. new mex.

From: "Geoff Martin" <Geoff@firstgenfirebird.org> Date: Tue, 30 Jan 2001 16:02:34 -0500   I would think you should be able to mount most of the items with zip strips. The only issue would be the hood alarm since it is a pin switch which indicates if the hood is raised. All others items I can think of are static alarms and detectors. Only need to find a place to get those strips around and not be visible.   Geoff '68 Mayfair Maize Firebird 350 Convertible <http://FirstGenFirebird.org/show/closeup.mv?CarID=3D46> <Geoff@FirstGenFirebird.org>   Jeff Davis   >Last summer I checked with a custom stereo/alarm installation place and = they >have the sensors used in convertibles. It takes more force to over come = static friction. Once the car is moving the rolling friction is less. The = reason a sliding tire lower the amount of friction is the tire is actually riding =   on molten rubber, much more slippery than the solid stuff, but it sure is fun.
