These cars didn't = have a carbon canister to catch the fumes from the tank. They also didn't have = to use a sealing gas cap. When you pull into the garage tha gas heats up and = give off vapor which than just vents to the atmosphere. With NO >rubs... Can anyone PLEASE verify this before I order them??? I thought = 4.5" >backspace was needed on back and 4" on front... Now Im confused... HELP = !!! Unless your car sits unusually low, a 4.5 inch backspacing front and back will work fine with either 15 inch or 16 inch wheels. The list member who mentioned the 4.25 inch backspacing may have had that as the only available offset he could select, or some other factor. That's only a quarter inch difference. But it would be better to pull the tire in that extra amount to allow for more clearance on the outside edge of the wheel well. But if I could choose between the two figures, I'd feel more comfortable with 4.5 inches. That still leaves plenty of room on the inside to avoid contact with the inner wheel wells or suspension parts. you later write: >OK - I just need to know what backspace is best on front of a >67 400 coupe...4" or 41/2"??? with 15x7's or 16x7's ... there are no rims = or >tires on the car to measure...PLEASE HELP !!! Actually, you can still measure the needed offset without wheels or tires on the car. Just put jackstands under the suspension so it is bearing the weight of the car. Take a flat edge and put it against the brake drum or rotor on the same plane where the wheel mounts. find the diameter and section width of the tires you want to mount (www.tirerack.com has this info) as well as the wheel width the tire requires, and you can use this data to see what backspacing will allow that tire to occupy this space. Make sure that you allow for the suspension to travel it's full range and factor clearance for the tire. Up front you want to turn the steering wheel lock to lock to measure where the potential contact points would be. This may mean stepping down a size to get the clearance you want. -Bob Cisneros San Jose, CA

(back) Subject: Re: Camaro vs Firebird front wheel wells From: "ROY D LUMSDEN" <rlumsden@tampabay.rr.com> Date: Tue, 23 Jan 2001 18:48:45 -0500 Joe, Funny how some of these topics are so timely. I just finished modifying a left side (driver's side) Firebird fenderwell to work on my 68 RS Camaro. The good news is that there is more material to work with on the Camaro fenderwells and you can easily trim them to look just like the Firebirds. = In fact, what I found was the Firebird fenderwells had all the required = dimples that marked where all the holes needed to be drilled to bolt all the RS stuff. Obviously, the just used one die to stamp both the Firebird and the Camaro fenderwells and then modified them as needed. The difference is in the very front, in front of the radiator support. So, even if you didn't = do a perfect job it would be next to impossible to see. Hope this helps, Roy ----- Original Message ----- From: <JGeigel@aol.com> To: "Firebird L Digest" <Firebird-L@oakmediacreations.com> Sent: Monday, January 22, 2001 11:20 PM Subject: Camaro vs Firebird front wheel wells > First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List > = ......................................................................... > Guys, > > I'm about ready to give up on finding a 68 Firebird front passenger side > wheel well. I'm really not talking about a CA built car, = but a CA delivered car. I have documentation that shows mine was sold in = CA upon assembly. (back) Subject: RE: Dash trim plate / Radio From: "Rodger Fromm" <rwfromm@nf.sympatico.ca> Date: Tue, 23 Jan 2001 22:06:37 -0330 If the in dash cd player is what you are doing, it is a pain. I put one = in just over a year ago the same time i replaced my floor for my 68. I made = up a dash plate and once the dash was cut out for the cd player it went in without a problem. Just make sure to keep the hole you make snug to the mounting bracket that would come with the cd player. i put in a pioneer player and speakers, cutting the holes for the 6x9 speakers in the rear = deck was not a overly fun job either but nothing a plasma cutter did not solve = in a hurry. Rodger Fromm 68 350 2bbl First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List .......................................................................... Steve, It takes quite a bit to get a Din radio in. I doubt you'll like the results. The angle of the dash slopes so much that the Din radio really has no way = to secure itself in the front without making up some custom brackets. I suspect the reason you want this is to have an in-dash CD player. There are some other options. Swap the factory radio for a dual shaft radio and add = a remote CD player in the trunk. This will minimize the treat of theft. Or install a "hidden" radio/CD player with a wired remote. You're factory radio stays in the dash keeping that "all stock" look of the car, yet you get great sound. If your dask is already butchered, not to worry. You can make up some brackets to re-mount your factory or aftermarket radio. The dash bezel = will cover your handy work just fine and the results will look clean. Al
