(back) Subject: Re: Matching Numbers? From: "K and J Arnold" <paintit@gate.net> Date: Fri, 12 Jan 2001 19:50:11 -0500   Let's face it- once a car has lost it's original engine, it's not the same car. And the value goes down. A numbers matching, reasonably optioned 400 convert.? 13-16k isn't too far fetched. I'd pay 6,000 for a non-numbers one.   If I found a car I wanted (72 RA 455 Formula) and it had a non #s 455 in it, I'd still buy it. I just wouldn't have to pay the extra 20K :)   Make sure YOU are sure what those "damaged" tags and plates say. It could be a 10,000 dollar issue.   As for #s and locations, a Year One Catalog is a handy source.   Is the tranny an auto or 4 speed? Numbers are in different locations for Muncie and Borg Warner sticks.   Ask to see the PHS on the car. If it's a #s matching worth high dollar, the guy should have the PHS and other documentation. Protecto plate, etc...   How much does he want?   Good luck Keith

The car is a 68 350 >automatic, and I have a freshly rebuilt Q jet.   It's not a difficult swap, but there are a few gotchyas to look out for.   -Spreadbore intake castings are pretty much the same from 1968 thru 1972. In 1973, Pontiac started using an EGR valve, and in 1976 or 1977, the intake was redesigned with more restritive ports. Thes are identified with an odd waffle imprint on the rear of the intake, behind the carb flange. These characteristics make these later intakes less desireable. Some 4bbl. intakes before 1968 were for squarebore carbs (using Carter AFB carbs), and the 1967 Qjet intake has an odd heat passage on the carb flange.   -Throttle cables and cable brackets differ from 2 bbl. and 4 bbl. applications. You will find that your 2 bbl. cable will not give you a full range of motion and may require some fabrication to get full throttle. Reproduction 4 bbl. cables are now available from Performance Years. You'll have to hunt the scrap yards for the bracket, or modify yours.   Here's a link to GTOKen's page on his modifications. <http://www.ipa.net/~gtoken/cable.html> -More on throttle brackets. Pontiac used a rod for 1967 cars, and then went to a cable for the 1968 and later cars. This cable is very different from that used in later Chevy applications. Around 1970 or 1971, the cable and bracket design changed again, eventually evolving to be more like the Chevy design. So, beware of cables or brackets from earlier or later cars (you don't indicate what year your car is). -You'll need a 4bbl. aircleaner. If you insist on a stock look, try ebay Classical Pontiac's classified pages.   -Bob Cisneros San Jose, CA 1968 Convertible bob.cisneros@Ebay.Sun.COM

(back) Subject: Re: balancing From: "Joe Brown" <jb.pb@gte.net> Date: Fri, 12 Jan 2001 21:53:52 -0800   Internal balancing Yes , I do not think the fluid damper will make a difference . Balancing seems to give the motor smoother and quicker acceleration . My engine builder told me all I need is a stock type damper = , also all my parts where balanced together balancer to flex plate . Joe
(back) Subject: re: Power steering conversion From: "Clayton C Koch" <CCKoch@bellsouth.net> Date: Fri, 12 Jan 2001 21:55:33 -0500   Niklas, you will have to get some hoses made because the later box uses metric fittings.Did you get the old hoses from the new box?? If so you can remove the fittings at the steering box and install them on your present hoses. I would like to know how this works out for you so keep us up to date. Clayton 68 350 HO

I'll be having a go at it within then next 2 weeks. I hear where you're coming from regarding changes in weight distribution when I start taking things apart. I've got =   4 stands rated at 6 ton each and a big mother of a rolling Jack....and I'm =   pretty anal about safety..I'll prop the body up with bricks and use the 4 stands on the rails, 2 at each end. I'll let everyone know how things get on.......cheers, Dale '68 conv.
